When we look at our children, we see the same kid we've seen every day since they were born. We have nothing to compare it to- we really just think most everything they do is amazing. It's usually when other people notice what are kids are doing that we find ourselves recognizing that they might be doing something remarkable. I suppose not many five year olds are loading software on the computer and installing it - correctly. And it's proabably unusual that Aethan can use the internet, finding his websites through google searches. It just adds to the list of all the things he can do that make my life so simple in raising him. He doesn't get frustrated- he just figures things out. If something is too hard he practices. He observes how things work and then tries all avenues to achieve his goal. If he doesn't have the "proper" materials, he uses what's available. Many things in our house are made from pieces of paper taped together and pipe cleaners. His need for structure is contradicted by his amazing talent of adaptability on a regular basis. If we pick him up from school before the time he knows school ends, we are told we are too early through fits of tears, but if he wants a bug house and we don't have one, he makes one out of a shoe box. He has created the system rather than living by someone else's.
His incredible hand-eye cordination has also allowed me to let him play with my iphone. He loves the ability to control the games in such a hands on way. And amazingly enough- I can completely trust him with it. I've dropped the thing 20 times, but he's never let it fall! I even got a comment from an old man in Walmart. "I can't believe you are letting a child that age use a $200 phone for a toy!" He doesn't know my child :)
